The Clayton Joyner Memorial Scholarship to Northern Virginia Community College APPLICATION
Background Information: The late Clayton Joyner (Coach CJ) attended Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) before completing his bachelor’s degree at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and earning a master’s degree from Georgetown University. He later taught at NOVA as an adjunct professor of physical education. He knew the value of attending Northern Virginia’s premier community college. This scholarship is dedicated to his memory.
What is the scholarship? $2000 each will be awarded to at least one graduating senior girl and one graduating senior boy from Falls Church High School to attend Northern Virginia Community College. It may be used to attend NOVA as a part time or full time student in the fall, spring or summer session even if the student is enrolled at another college or post-secondary education program.
How do you qualify for the scholarship?
• Be a graduating senior from FCHS
• Show financial need
• Show academic promise
Deadline for qualifying: Application and one page essay. Applicants will be notified of their award. Where to send the application and essay: teamjoynerfoundation@gmail.com Method of payment: Money for expenses (tuition, fees and books) for the first semester the student attends NOVA will be deposited in each student’s account at NOVA. Upon successful completion of coursework for that semester, any additional monies remaining from the award will be deposited into the student’s account for the next semester in which he or she attends until a maximum of $2,000 is reached.

GUIDELINES FOR THE COACH CJ SPIRIT SCHOLARSHIP
FALLS CHURCH HIGH SCHOOL SWIM AND DIVE TEAM

Two Coach CJ Spirit Scholarships are awarded annually to seniors (one girl and one boy) on the Falls Church High School Swim Dive Team. Each scholarship is worth $2,000.00. The money is deposited into the winning student’s account for post-secondary education at a community college, college, university, certificate or technical program of the student’s choice. The late Coach Clayton (Coach CJ) Joyner brought enormous enthusiasm, skill and commitment to the team. He believed in every individual swimmer and diver. He wanted each member of the team to excel to their best ability. His goals were always to break records as individuals and as a team and to strive for “honor and glory.” The award is given in Coach CJ’s memory to the swimmer or diver who best demonstrates the kind of team spirit and leadership which he exemplified. They do not have to be the fastest swimmer or the best diver. They should be the swimmer or diver who inspires his or her teammates to become the best they can be as individual athletes and as a team.
HOW TO NOMINATE OR APPLY
Nominations for a senior boy and/or senior girl may be made by any member of the swim dive team, by coaches, or by the swimmer or diver himself or herself. All members of the team are encouraged to make nominations. Fill out the simple nomination form. Give very brief and specific examples of their team spirit and leadership.
